Weiser athletes put in top performances at SRV District meet

Weiser High School will send 19 track and field athletes to the 3A State Championships on May 17-18 at Middleton after strong finishes by the boys and girls at the 3A SRV District 3 meet last week in Payette.
    Weiser athletes saved some of their best efforts of the season for the district meet and posted a number of personal records. The top three finishers in each event at district earned a spot at the state championships.
 Weiser coach Dave Shirts said he sees the definite possibility of the Wolverines winning some medals at state. 
 “Our athletes competed hard at district. I was very pleased with the effort and competitiveness of all our kids,” he said.
    In team scores, the Weiser boys finished in fourth place behind Parma. Fruitland took first place at the district meet.
    The Grizzlies also placed first for the girls, with Weiser coming in a strong second place and Parma grabbing third place.
    In boys results, Weiser’s Rhett Kunz will defend his title as the fastest runner in the 3A division in the 800 meters at state. He won the 800 meters with a time of 2:01.33 at the SRV District meet. His winning time in 800 meters in the 3A State Championships in 2018 was 1:57.69.
    In the 110 meter hurdles, Weiser’s Nick Swank placed sixth with a time of 17.67 seconds. In the 300 meters, Braden Bumgarner came in second with a time of 42.96 seconds.
    In the boys relays, Weiser took fourth in the 4x100 and fourth in the 4x200. The team of Braden Bumgarner, Triston Kautz, Nathan Turner and Rhett Kunz won the 4x400 with time of 3:33.22. Weiser also won the SMR 1,600 meters (200, 200, 400, 800).
    In the discus, Angel Magana placed third with a toss of 126 feet, 2 inches. Freshman Daniel Rodriguez had a personal record throw of 100 feet, 6 inches for seventh place. Tyler Walker placed 10th with a toss of 86 feet, 3 inches.
    Nick Swank won the high jump with a personal record effort. He cleared 6 feet for first place. Swank was two inches better than second place winner Jayden Stice of Fruitland, who cleared 5 feet, 10 inches.
    In the pole vault, Weiser junior Travis Schimmel cleared 8 feet, 6 inches to place sixth. It was a personal best for him.
    Weiser’s Jordan Watkins placed fifth in the long jump. He jumped 18 feet, 8.5 inches. Alex Pena took ninth place with a jump of 16 feet, 7.50 inches.
    Watkins had another good finish in the triple jump. His jump of 38 feet, 5.50 inches, a personal best, gave him third place. Teammate Nathan Turner placed fifth with a jump of 38 feet, 1 inch.
    In the girls results, Weiser collected team points for top finishes in both race and field events, including first place in the 200 meters and 400 meters and first in the shot put and triple jump.
    In the 100 meters, freshman SeAnna Jones placed eighth for Weiser with a time of 14.25 seconds.
    In the 200 meters, Weiser senior Abbey Shirts didn’t hold anything back and won with a personal record time of 26.38 seconds. At the finish line she was a fraction of a second faster than runner-up Madison Tesnohlidek, who posted a time of 26.47 seconds. Shirts beat a pack of Fruitland girls who finished second, third and fourth. Weiser’s Ashlyn Walker finished in eighth place with a time of 30.61 seconds.
    Shirts also won the 400 meters with a finish that was three seconds faster than Fruitland’s Karley Walker, who placed second with a time of 1:02.74. Shirts had a season-best finish of 59.78 seconds, a fast race that was over in under a minute.
    Also in the top 10 in the 400 meters for Weiser were Samantha Despain (1:10.23, 4th) and Suzanne Cannon (1:15.23, 8th).
    Weiser’s Christina Alves finished in the top 10 in the 800 meters (2:52.34, 8th).
    In the 1,600 meters, Weiser had five girls finish in the top 15: Kiearra Hoobery (6:11.03, 4th), Bella Strasser (6:23.76, 8th), Makaela Sherry (6:36.11, 10th), Christina Alves (6:34.61, 12th) and Alonna Freeland (7:21.52, 15th).
    In the 3,200 meters, the Weiser girls took four of the top eight places: Makaela Sherry (13.22.75, 4th), Kiearra Hoobery (14:00.47, 6th), Alonna Freeland (17:16.18, 7th) and Jaclyn Dunn (18:16.38, 8th).
    In the 100 meter hurdles, Ellie Walker took second place (18.15 seconds), Samantha Despain finished in fourth place (20.36 seconds) and Victoria Wyss placed sixth (22.10 seconds). Walker also placed second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 50.96 seconds, a personal record for her.
    The Weiser girls placed third in the 4x100 relay, the 4x200 relay and the 4x400 relay. The Weiser team of Alyssa Olvera, Reagan Doty, Shae Kunz and Abbey Shirts placed first in the SMR (100-100-200-400 meters) with a time of 1:54.50.
    In the shot put, Weiser senior Sheyanne Hilmer has come on strong in the latter half of the season. She won the event with a toss of 30 feet, 4.75 inches. Weiser had a number of finishers in the top 15: Yerika Marquez (28 feet, 0.25 inches, 5th), Judith Rios (27 feet, 4.50 inches, 7th), Ellie Eames (25 feet, 8.25 inches, 10th), Ruby Sanchez (24 feet, 11 inches, 11th), Grace Arnold (24 feet, 7.75 inches, 13th).
    In the discus, Hilmer came in third place with a toss of 95 feet, 11 inches. Other top 15 finishers for Weiser included: Yerika Marquez (90 feet, 5 inches, 6th), Samantha Flores (70 feet, 11 inches, 11th), Ellie Eames (68 feet, 10.50 inches, 14th), Bailey Adams (66 feet, 9 inches, 15th).
    In the high jump, LynnZ Rasmussen finished fifth for Weiser. She cleared 4 feet, 4 inches in her best jump.
    After finishing first in the 200 meters and the 400 meters, Abbey Shirts also put in her best pole vault of the season to win the event. She cleared 10 feet, a vault that was 6 inches higher than runner-up Danielle Grant of Payette, who vaulted 9 feet, 6 inches. Other Weiser competitors included: Reagan Doty (9 feet, 3rd), Victoria Wyss (8 feet, 4th), LynnZ Rasmussen (8 feet, 5th).
    In the long jump, Weiser had four placers in the top 10: Ashlyn Walker (14 feet, 9.5 inches, 2nd), Kaija Sanchez (14 feet, 5.25 inches, 3rd), Bella Strasser (13 feet, 11.25 inches, 5th), Ruby Sanchez (12 feet, 10.25 inches, 9th).
    In the triple jump, Ellie Walker placed first with a season-best jump of 34 feet, .75 inches. Kaija Sanchez finished in sixth place with a jump of 30 feet, 6 inches and Bella Strasser took eighth place with a jump of 29 feet, 11 inches.
