Washington County probation officials plan to notify Adams County they will no longer provide juvenile probation services at the end of the 2019 fiscal year.
Dahlia Stender, chief of the Washington County probation department, told county commissioners that Adams County officials plan to hire someone to handle probation duties. Adams County also has a new prosecuting attorney who wanted to go in a different direction, she said.
Washington County probation officers have been assisting Adams County at the request of Adams County officials since April of 2018. The workload has grown from no juveniles on probation when the agreement started to supervising 10 juveniles. The job requires Washington County probation officials to commute from Weiser to Council.
Stender said her department can terminate the contract with Adams County with 30 days notice, and now would be a good time to do it at the end of the current fiscal year. The decision was mutually agreeable to both parties.
“I thought this would be a good ending point,” Stender said.
Washington County was paid for the work probation officers did in handling juvenile cases in Adams County. The contract totaled about $25,000 and was paid by Adams County from state juvenile funds, Stender said.
