Candidates filed the paperwork to run for a number of city and county offices by the deadline last Friday, setting up some contested races that voters will decide on Nov. 5.
While it’s an off-year for high-profile races like the presidential election and congressional contests, there will be city and county offices on the ballot in November.
The office of Weiser mayor is a three-way race for the open seat. After serving two terms, current mayor Diana Thomas declined to seek re-election.
The candidates who filed for the office include Randy Hibberd, Dan Randleman and Alex Chavarria. Both Hibberd and Randleman currently serve on the Weiser City Council. Their terms of office do not expire until 2021.
The Weiser Signal American incorrectly reported in the Sept. 4 issue that current Weiser city council member Cliff Barberis also had filed for mayor.
Barberis filed to keep his seat on the six-member city council and is not running for mayor.
There are three Weiser City Council seats up for election in November and five city residents filed for office.
In addition to Barberis filing for re-election to the city council, incumbent council members Larry Hogg and Layna Hafer also filed to retain their seats.
Candidates Bonnie Akbar and Chris Hagans filed for city council and the top three vote-getters will win offices.
In the city of Midvale, incumbent mayor Brian Graham filed for another term in office and was unchallenged. Two city council positions are up for election and both incumbents filed for office. Council members Phyllis Widner and Katie Bane were unchallenged for another term in office.
In Cambridge, there will be two new faces on the city council after the two incumbents on the four-member city council did not file for another term.
Former mayor Nanette Rhodes, Delray Platt and Levi Harrison filed for the two open council seats. The top two vote-getters will win office.
Residents across the county will vote on other board seats for various taxing districts and school boards.
Two of the three school board seats up for election in the Weiser School District will see contested races this fall.
Incumbent Zone 1 trustee Cary Gibbs filed to retain his seat on the school board. He faces challenger Justin Erickson.
Incumbent Zone 5 trustee Kerry Nyce filed for another term in office on the school board. The seat is contested with Crystal Torres and Russell Haggerty also filing as candidates.
Zone 4 trustee Dr. Mark Pritchard filed to retain his seat on the Weiser school board and was not challenged.
In the Midvale School District, there are two trustee spots up for election and both incumbents filed for re-election. Steven Sutton filed to retain his seat in Zone 3. Andrew Mikek filed for another term on the board representing Zone 4.
In the Cambridge School District, there are three seats on the school board up for election but only two incumbents filed to retain their offices for another term. Myra Crocco will serve another term as trustee for Zone 4. Jared Farren will serve another term in Zone 3.
There will be one open position on the Cambridge school board that will be filled by appointment.
There was one seat up for election on the Cambridge Fire District. The current office-holder, Robert Vowell, filed for another term.
Incumbents Harmon Horton and Howard Keithley Jr. both filed to keep their seats on the Midvale Fire Protection District.
Current board members Dennis Cooper and Seth Matthews filed for another term of the Weiser Area Rural Fire District
The Hillcrest Cemetery Maintenance District has one seat up for election. The incumbent office-holder, Ron Bruce, filed for another term and was unchallenged.
The two incumbents on the Midvale cemetery district filed for office and were not challenged. Both Gerald McLay and Gerald Myers will serve another term.
Current office-holders Dale Barton and Gary Cada filed for the two Salubria Cemetery district board seats up for election this fall.
