Mildred Marie (Hopkins) Marti Stringer

Mildred Marie (Hopkins) Marti Stringer of Cambridge, Idaho passed away peacefully on June 5, 2022 surrounded by family.
She was born Nov. 21, 1926, in Yoder, Colo., and was raised in the Weiser and Cambridge areas.
In 1944, she married Howard Marti. They had two sons, Derald (1945) and Dennis (1947) and made their home on the family farm in Cambridge in 1952.
Mildred worked throughout her life. First at the D.O. Danielson Grocery Store, before becoming head cook at the Cambridge School District. Then at the City Market for Lawrence and Maryann Ford. During this time, she was also a substitute bus driver for her then husband, Howard. Later, she became the head cook at the Cambridge Senior Citizens Center.
While there she would make a group cake for all the birthdays on the last Friday of each month for the Seniors. This led her to be known as the “Cake Lady” around Cambridge for many years as she created many birthday and wedding cakes that were both delicious and beautiful.
Mildred was a homebody that enjoyed gardening, at one time having a very large iris garden. She also was a canner, a cake decorator, and an avid collector. A few of her collections included owls, chickens, and decorative colored glass. Her favorite and most prized collection were her glass bells. Family and friends would send her bells from all over and she had a story for each one.
In her spare time, she made wall decorations from metal cans and plaster. She loved animals in which she owned dogs, cats, birds, and fish.
In 1983, Mildred’s husband, Howard, passed away. She married Art Stringer in 1984. They moved to Weiser until his passing in 2008.
Due to health reasons, Mildred moved back to Cambridge in 2012 to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Rhonda Marti, until her passing.
She was preceded in death by her parents Jess and Mary Hopkins, husband Howard Marti, husband Art Stringer, and 17 siblings. She was the last surviving sibling.
Mildred is survived by her sons Derald (Donna) Marti of Fruitland, Idaho; Dennis (Rhonda) Marti of Cambridge, Idaho; four grandchildren, Angela (Wayne) Crookshank, Stormi Moskal, Dusti (Jason) Kindall, and Kerry (Charley) Kindall; eight great-grandchildren, Ryan Kindall, Brenna Cada, Bret Kindall, Valery Kindall, Connor Crookshank, Dillon Crookshank, Siarra Moskal and Austin Moskal; along with one very special great-great-grandchild, Jasi Lynn Cada, the spark of her life.
Mildred’s very good friend, Edgar Prouty, would visit her whenever he returned from Baltimore, Maryland. They would visit for several hours at a time.
A very special thanks to Rhonda for taking care of her for so many years. She relied on her love and care in her final years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cambridge Ambulance.
Graveside service was held at the Salubria Cemetery on June 9, 2022 at 1 p.m.
