Letter: It’s time to create a mosquito abatement program

Editor:
I am writing today to
urge the county commissioners
to develop a mosquito
abatement program in
Washington County.
The mosquitoes during
the summer months have
become a public health
issue. There are at least
four people (including my
neighbor) that I am aware
of that have gotten infected
by the West Nile
virus after being bitten by
mosquitos in Washington
County.
West Nile virus is
deadly to both humans as
well as livestock and is
not curable. My vet in
Weiser has treated horses
that have contacted the virus,
and one of my horses
had over 50 mosquito bites
on her.
It is time to take this very
seriously and develop a
mosquito abatement district
today.
After talking to the Idaho
Department of Public
Health I was shocked to
discover that our county’s
trapped mosquitos tested
positive for the virus
and that we do not have a
mosquito abatement program
to protect our citizens
and livestock.
This is not just an issue
that affects people who live
out in country areas those
same mosquitos can fly
into the cities and bite
people living there as well.
Please take action today
to protect the citizens of
Washington County from
this public health issue.
