Lady Wolverines on a roll with win over McCall-Donnelly

The Lady Wolverines hosted the visiting Vandals from McCall-Donnelly on Sept. 9, and despite some rough patches the Weiser squad came out with the win 3-1.
The Lady Wolverines fell behind early-on in the first set, but a collaborative stuff block by Reagan Doty and Jasi Yraguen enabled the Wolverines to tie the game 5-5.  Macey Buescher went on a serving run, scoring 5 unanswered points and expanded the lead 11-8. Setter Ciana Fuller delivered a sneaky dump set on the second contact, which caught the Vandal defense off guard.
The side-out placed Grace Soulen behind the service line and with the aid of two kills by Doty and an ace serve, Soulen pulled the Wolverines ahead 17-11. Leading 22-13, the Lady Wolverines appeared to have the set easily in hand, but they nearly let up on the intensity too soon, allowing the Vandals back into the set 24-18. However, a service error by the Vandals enabled the Wolverines to take the first set 25-18.
The Lady Wolverines battled into the second set, trading points through the 9-9 mark.  However, a series of errors let the Vandals pull into the lead 11-16. Trailing 13-20, the Wolverines took advantage of a rotation error by the Vandals, allowing Fuller to score 3 points for the Wolverines.
Soulen had similar success from the service line, pulling the Wolverines within 3-points at 19-22.  Jade Simonson decreased the deficit even more with an ace serve, a kill by Doty and a stuff block by Yraguen.  Simonson continued her dominance from the service line, overtaking the Vandals 24-22, but the Wolverines lost some focus at a critical juncture, and succumbed to coverage errors and allowed the Vandals to take the second set 24-26.
The third set was a battle for both teams. Scrappy, aggressive play had the Vandals and Wolverines trading points through half of the set. Tied at 12-12, Soulen went on a run, serving four unanswered points with the aid of a Doty kill.
The Wolverines jumped out to a 16-12 lead, but the Vandals countered and came back within one point at 17-16, when a kill by Whitney Cordes stopped the Vandal surge. The Wolverines continued to press onward and took the third set 25-22.
The Wolverines took an early 5-1 lead in the fourth set of the match. Both teams battled for every point and the Vandals were able to tie the set 13-13.  With Soulen behind the service line, an ace and a kill by Cordes became the impetus for the Wolverines to dominate the remainder of the set. Three kills by Doty, a stuff block by Yraguen and scrappy, aggressive play enabled the Wolverines to take the fourth and final set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
