Lady Wolverines go 1-1 in Kimberly Spring Classic
Wrapping up last week’s five-game schedule on Saturday, April 2, Weiser’s varsity softball team went 1-1 at the Kimberly Spring Classic, defeating the Kimberly Bulldogs 13-5, and dropping one to the Sugar-Salem Diggers 15-8.
The Wolverines jumped to an early lead over the Bulldogs, adding 8 runs in the second inning to lead 11-3.
Tobie Noyer got things started in the first, doubling on a line drive to center and scoring Whitney Cordes. With two outs and two on base, Paisley Noyer singled, advancing Abi Wilkins to third, and sending Tobie home. Back-to-back walks sent Wilkins home to finish Weiser’s scoring in the first.
One run for the Bulldogs in the bottom half set things up for the Wolverines big second inning. Putting up hits that turned into runs in the drive were Macy Maloney, Wilkins, P. Noyer, Taylor Bushong, and Hannah Swank. Kimberly answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
P. Noyer started on the mound for Weiser, going two innings and striking out four. Cordes took over in the third, allowing two hits, two runs, and striking out one.
Noyer and Noyer each went 2-for-3 at the plate. Wilkins, P. Noyer, and H. Swank recorded two RBIs apiece in the win.
Wolverines vs Diggers
An eight-run inning in the fourth put the Sugar-Salem Diggers into a 10-4 lead in a later afternoon game, with the final score 15-8.
The Wolverines recorded 7-for-26 at the plate, scoring eight runs over six innings. Five Weiser fielding errors contributed to four runs for the Diggers.
With two on the board, Weiser scored one in the third, and one in the fourth. They added four in the fifth.
Cordes doubled on a line drive to right field while Ivy Morris scored from first on the throw. Cordes advanced to third, and Wilkins walked. H. Swank bunted and reached on an error, scoring both Wilkins and Cordes on the same error. P. Noyer grounded out on the next at bat, but Swank scored from third on the throw from second to first.
The Diggers added two in the sixth. Weiser’s attempt at a comeback was cut short with a ground out, and two fielder’s choice plays in the bottom of the inning, ending in the 15-8 loss.
Cordes started for Weiser on the mound, surrendering 13 runs on 13 hits over five innings, striking out four, and no walks. P. Noyer threw one inning, striking out one and allowing two runs on two hits. Cordes went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Wolverines in hits.
