Lady Wolverines end season with big win

by Zane Davis
The final regular season game for the Lady Wolverines took place in the dome at the home of the Payette Pirates last week. Following a dominating 32-point win over the Homedale Trojans, the Lady Wolverines were on a high and planned to expand on their winning streak to secure a top seeding in the upcoming SRV District Tournament and hopefully qualify for a berth in the 3A Idaho State Basketball Tournament.
The Lady Wolverines went into the Payette game with a 6-3 conference record and punished the Pirates in a brutal 56-16 win.
The Lady Wolverines took the lead in the first quarter of the game with 3-point baskets from Macy Maloney and Kailee Lerew, while Tobie Noyer had one 2-point basket and perfection from the charity stripe, shooting 4 for 4. Mattie Shirts added 4-points from the field and Jasi Yraguen had 2-points.
The 18-Wolverine points bested the Pirate shooters by 10-points and with an 18-8 lead, the Lady Wolverines never looked back.
The Lady Wolverine defense held the Pirates to only one basket from the field and two from the free throw line, while the Wolverine shooters had the hot hand scoring another 15-points.
Brady Reed was on fire with two baskets from beyond the arc, one shot from 2-point land and 100 percent, 3 for 3 from the free throw line. Lerew and Maloney helped the cause with 2-points apiece in the period to give the Wolverines a 33-12 lead at halftime.
Leading 33-12, the Wolverines were hot on both ends of the court, shutting out the Pirate shooters completely and leaving them scoreless in the third period.
Meanwhile, despite a running clock, the Wolverines continued to find time to put 17 additional points on their side of the scoreboard. Noyer was 2 for 2 from 3-point land for 6-points, while Shirts added 4-points and Maloney had 3-points. Lerew and Reed had 2-points apiece, giving the Wolverines an amazing 50-12 lead.
The Wolverine scorers eased up a bit in the final period with only Yraguen, Ivy Morris, and Shirts getting on the board with 2-points apiece, but with the Pirates only managing to score 4-points in the final period, the Lady Wolverines walked away with a huge 40-point (56-16) win over the Pirates.
Brady Reed was the top scorer of the evening with 13-points, followed closely by Tobie Noyer with 12-points. Mattie Shirts and Macy Maloney were next in line with 10-points and 8-points, respectively, followed by Kailee Lerew with 7-points. Jasi Yraguen and Ivy Morris rounded out the Wolverine scoring with 4-points and 2-points respectively.
The win concluded the Lady Wolverines’ regular season play with an impressive 13-5 (non-tournament) record and a 7-3 Snake River Valley Conference record.
The Lady Wolverines will be seeded in third place behind the Fruitland Grizzlies (first) and the Parma Panthers (second) in the SRV District Tournament that begins this week.
