Kids show off four-legged friends at Paws and Pals contest

by Nicole Miller
The 4-H Paws and Pals club held a dog costume contest and agility showcase fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 23.
The goal of the fundraiser was to help raise money for new agility equipment, as well as the repair of some existing equipment.
The event was held in conjunction with 4-H month, with enrollment for many of the Washington County groups open throughout October as they begin their 2021-2022 season.
4-H provides opportunities for youth ages 5- to 18-years-old to participate in innovative and fun programs that help them develop valuable, lifelong skills and leadership abilities to make a difference in their community.
From livestock to cooking and cake decorating, the Washington County 4H organization has helped area youth accomplish their goals and showcase their talents at fair and beyond.
One local club, Paws and Pals 4-H club, helps youth learn to train and show their favorite four-legged best friends.
Leader Janet Sorensen said that not everyone has an opportunity to raise livestock, but more kids are able to have dogs and this club can give those children a chance to participate at the fair.
The club is in its third year in Washington County and currently has 15 members, which focuses on dog training and dog agility training.
Co-leader, Megan Reynolds, has a lot of experience with dog agility training, and Sorensen has been working with a trainer for the last three years, so the group has had fun learning and growing together.
The group is welcoming new membership and will start meeting in January. Anyone interested in learning more about the club can contact the University of Idaho Extension office at (208) 414-0415.
