Hazards exist in burned areas of Woodhead Fire

The Woodhead Fire that swept the Weiser Ranger District northwest of Cambridge is 90 percent contained, said an updated report. The fire area closures are now open, but travelers are advised to remain cautious, said Weiser and Council District Recreation Program Manager Jascha Zeitlin.
No growth is expected as of Thursday, with the cooler weather and a cold front bringing heavy winds and helping keep the fire controlled.
A total of 34 structures were lost in the fire, however none were primary structures such as primary residencies.
A total of 96,614 acres were burned, effecting both government managed lands and private land owners.
As the colder months approach, the potential for dangerous situations caused by the fire grows. Underground smoldering continues and weakened root systems may cause trees to fall. Wind events tend to cause trees to collapse, said Zeitlin, and individuals recreating are advised to remain cautious.
Potential for tree fall is mostly located along the 055 road within the Payette National Forest boundary, said Zeitlin. Rock slides and flash flooding are also possibilities caused by disrupted and loosened soil from the fire.
Underground smoldering is potentially scattered and can be found throughout the perimeter of the fire. The estimated containment date is October 31 at 12 a.m., according to the incident update.
“Just because [the areas] are not closed doesn’t mean it’s totally safe,” said Zeitlin. “There’s a lot of hazards associated with burned areas.”
