All athletes need to have a physical to participate in school sports programs

Free sports physicals are once again being offered to all student athletes in the Weiser School District who plan to participate in school sanctioned sports this upcoming school year.

The event is scheduled for Monday, July 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Weiser High School auxiliary gym, located at 690 W. Indianhead Road.
Hosting the event are Weiser Memorial Hospital, Weiser Family Medical Center, and Two Rivers Medical Clinic.
The Idaho High School Activities Association requires athletes be screened once every other year, but the Weiser School District requires the physical annually to be cleared for participation in sports activities, according to WHS Athletic Director Bowe von Brethorst.
The intent is to rule out the risk of serious injury or harm that might have been avoided through careful screening, and coaches need to know, on an ongoing basis, that athletes are healthy and fit to participate in a safe manner, according to www.coastalorthoteam.com. In addition, an annual exam before the start of the sports season can rule out injury or underlying health conditions that may have developed since previous exams.
Passing the exam means that an athlete is medically cleared to safely train and compete.
The physical is good for the entire 2024-25 school year.
“There is height, weight, blood pressure, a vision test, and then they go in and spend a little bit of time with the doctor,” said WMH Manager of Marketing and Community Relations Kasey Davis. “They check reflexes, their heart and lungs, and do some mobility and balance type things.”
Sports physical examination consent forms must be signed by a parent or guardian. They are available at the WSD office, at 925 Pioneer Road, or Family Medical Center, located at 360 E. Liberty.
Organizers encourage participants to arrive at the designated times listed below based on the first letter of their last name. Siblings are allowed to go through stations together.
 Here is the breakdown:
 • A-D: 5:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.
 • E-J: 6 p.m. – 6:30 P.m.
 • K-P: 6:30 p.m. – 7 p.m.
 • Q-T: 7 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
 • U-Z: 7:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Every year, between 150 and 190 Weiser kids receive physicals at the free event, with providers, physicians, nurses, and volunteers taking time out of their day to help give back to the community.
Davis said it is a good idea to take advantage of the free event, otherwise athletes will have to schedule an appointment with their regular provider.
Those not feeling well are asked not to attend the event.
