Cross country teams begin season with two meets

The Weiser High School cross country team has competed in their first two meets of the year, and the year is starting off well for the Wolverine runners.
They competed in the Dash and Splash Jamboree in McCall on Saturday, Aug. 21  and then competed in the Jimmy Driscol Invitational at Bishop Kelly High School on Aug. 28.
Coach Scott Hale shared that after the first two meets, the girl’s team is looking excellent. Kylee Quinton finished the jamboree in 20:06 and was named “Queen of the Hill.” Kendall Rynearson was not far behind with a fifth place finish. Kailee Lerew and Sarah Henderson also ran very well for their first freshman race.
For the boys side, almost half our boys did not run in the jamboree for various reasons, but Hale said that those that were able to run, Colton Foster, Elias Anderson, and Aaron Despain showed significant progress from their previous times last year. They were able to run smart as a pack and came in at the end very close together.
For the Jimmy Driscoll Invitational, the race was much larger and the runners were able to see how their times compared to competition from the larger schools.
Quinton finished 12th with a time of 20:00:29. Kendall Rynearson finished her second fastest race ever, just shy of a personal record with a time of 21:54.38. Freshman Kailee Lerew finished with a time of 22:33.02. Senior Libbie Rynearson finished with a time of 24:55.39. Freshman, Sarah Henderson finished with a time of 25:30.34.
On the boys side, the Weiser team chose to run JV for the Jimmy Driscoll Invitational, looking at the race as a chance to gain experience and get ready for the regular season.
Hale shared that the boys once again ran well. He expects to see Colton Foster, Eli Woods, Coyler Chandler, and Aaron Despain to all finish in under 20 minutes before the end of the season.
“Overall, the entire team is doing well and I expect a great season,” Hale said.
The Wolverines are looking forward to hosting the  Weiser Invitational on the Rolling Hills Golf Course on Thursday Sept. 2.
