Cambridge business recognized with award for food safety

As part of National Food Safety Month, Southwest District Health recognized 10 southwest Idaho food establishments as Food Merit Award winners for calendar year 2017.
Representatives from the 10 recognized establishments were invited to attend a reception held at SWDH’s Canyon County facility in Caldwell to celebrate their accomplishments.
In Washington County, the winner was Gateway Store and Cafe in Cambridge. The business is located just outside of Cambridge and provides food, groceries, gas, ice and propane.
“We try hard each and every day to make our customers happy. We appreciate all of our customers,” said owner Terry Day. “Our favorite feature of owning a restaurant is the people you meet from all over the world.”
Every food establishment operating in the six-county area of southwest Idaho is inspected annually for food safety and sanitation by licensed environmental health specialists from the health district.
The inspection includes storing food at safe temperatures; hand washing and good hygienic practices, and the use of clean equipment. All food establishment inspections are unannounced except for pre-opening inspections. In total, 1370 facilities were inspected in 2017.
This is the 19th anniversary for the health district’s merit award program. The award is presented each year to at least one establishment in each county that the health district serves. The 2017 Merit  Award is conducted in 2018 since 2017 is the last year all food establishments have been inspected. Businesses must be in good standing for two years to be nominated for the award.
National Food Safety Month is held annually in September. It was created in 1994 by the National Restaurant Association to heighten awareness about the importance of food safety education.
